Gotta love Murdoch2007's little "sick" editorializing.
Now true, I had two pair, top and bottom, so in theory I could have been beat. Murdoch could have caught a set (Nines would have been most likely, considering) or he could have the better two pair. What I put him on was Ace King or maybe aces, considering his pre-flop raise of my button limp and and his check-raise after the flop.
But King Ten? (Okay, it was sooooooted, but it's not like he picked up a flush draw with the flop.)
Maybe my re-raising was donkish, (I don't have a lot of experience in heads-up tourneys) but it seems to me two pair is a damn fine flop in those situations. And of course, the pro could have slowed it down by just calling at any point too.
But Murdoch2007 is entitled to his opinion of course.

At the time this hand started, I had about 28,000 chips, giving me less than the cost of three full orbits (Blinds and antes were 6000/3000/500). My tournament position was around 45 or 46 with 50 spots getting tickets. In short, I wasn't at all sure that I could fold my way to a ticket.
Ace Jack offsuit was about as good a hand as I had seen in about a half hour. I was under the gun, but everyone except PutzinAround was playing extremely tight, and Puttzin was buying every pot, so I figured he was playing pretty much any two.
So what I decided to do was limp in, watch everyone fold to Puttz, who would put in a token raise, which I would then push on.
.Which is exactly what happened. I limped, it folded around to Puttz who min-raised, and I pushed. So far perfect.
I figured he'd most likely fold (adding a much-needed 19K from the blinds and antes to my stack) but if he didn't I would be at worst ahead, or at least strongly favored.
He called holding Nine Ten offsuit. Definitely the type of hand I expected. The Mutt is a two-to-one favorite over the Puttz. (FWI, I had both his suits dominated, so the dreaded four-flush wasn't an issue. Score!)
Flop was a good-looking Two Three Two. Turn is a much feared Nine. River is a brick and Mutt goes out with a whimper.
Still, I'm extremely happy with my analysis of what the possibilities were in the hand. Sure, I could have pushed pre-flop, and maybe I should have. Maybe he folds to that, though I actually think the limp/push represents a stronger hand. So in terms of pokerthink, I'm good with where I was.
And yeah, it burned at the time that I went out so close to the prize, but in retrospect I'm glad I pushed with the hand I felt would win, instead of being forced into a corner and having to push with whatever I happened to catch in a later blind. I'd rather lose with smart aggression than lose with smart submission.
Of course, without my earlier alluded-to boneheaded play, I could have been in coast mode at that point with at least 50K. So the Mutt isn't entirely pleased with Saturday afternoon's performance. But that's for the next post.

Now, on the flop I of course figured the straight was a possibility, and I assumed Uncle Artie had it when he called all-in, but his stack was insignificant and I knew no one else had it when the rest of the motley crew just called my overbet of the pot on the flop. So I figured I was dealing with naked aces and/or flush draws.
Turn puts a non-flushy 9 out there, adding some straight possibilities to the river, but I wasn't very worried about that. I'd already decided no one had improved, the flush draw still bothered me, and let's get the drawing idiots gone now.
HA ha.
River pairs the board in Kings, counterfeiting my Aces and Tens, and the naked Ace Jack takes the big pot with a better kicker.
So that's how it's been going.
P.S. While editing this, my turned boat (Eights full of Nines) was just nuked from orbit by someone who flopped (and slow played) Eights full of Queens. The river improved him to Queens full of Eights; the PokerStars server has a twisted sense of humor.
]]>One word: eh.
Only played four significant hands. Early in the tourney a player who got himself short-stacked raised it up on my big blind with a four-times-the-blind bet, which I called with 8T suited on principal. The flop was something like King Ten Nine, and I bet half-pot, he goes over-the-top all-in, and I call assuming he's missed. Well, he hadn't missed; he had KJ, the Jack on the turn gave him two pair, and the Seven on the river gave DonkeyMut a healthy stack early and the other guy a pretty good bad-beat story.
I was soon shortstacked again when someone pushed their pocket Sevens into my pocket Queens. I went all in when the flop came 67T with two spades, he instacalls, and I'm a saaaaaad rottweiler.
After stealing some blinds and smacking down some would-be stealers of mine, I was back up to nearly my starting stack (but seriously short-stacked relative to average) when a shorter stack pushed into my pocket Kings (which was only the second quality hand I during the entire tourney) with AK. I fade the remaining Aces and make it past the second break.
Busted out after being massively card dead for, like, forever, when some new guy to my table raised big his fourth hand in a row in front of me, and I pushed back, going all-in with KQ off. By that point I had 17k in chips, average stack was around 40k, blinds and antes were 1000/500/75, and I figured I was probably up against an average hand and he'd fold, because no one had challenged him to that point. If he didn't fold, I figured I was favored or in a coinflip situation.
But no. Push monkey had caught pocket Aces. Mut goes down! Mut goes down!
Bottom line, out of 1337 entrants, I finished at 395. Besides for an inexcusable donkey moment early on (which worked out well for me, of course) I was pretty happy with my play considering the cards I was getting. I might have picked a better hand on which to make my stand, and I might have noticed that instead of his usual raise of 4000 chips PushMonkey had raised 5000 on the last hand (but even then, that could be read as a sign of weakness relative to his other, uncontested hands) but, as they say, I was playing to win and was getting to the point where I was running out of fold equity. Just picked a bad hand on which to semi-bluff.
A final note: I recognized exactly one player I played with as a poker blogger I actually read. Nice to meet you Drizz, and someday when I have money and the attention span of at least a lower primate I hope to play with you again.

The lousy thing is when I bet on the flop and got flat-called by tak, I put him on AT. (actionnuts I discounted for some reason; but something about how tak had been playing made me take him seriously.) So I should have been in go-slow mode. A smaller feeler bet when the Ace hit on the turn would have been appropriate. One way or the other, when he check-raised big I should have mucked instantly.
Then I never see the river Ace giving me trips (and of course giving tak the boat) so it wouldn't have come into the decision making process anyway.
I've said before that I think the most important skill in hold'em is to be able to put your opponents on a hand. Here I got that part right, and then didn't have enough courage (or maybe I just had too much greed) to trust my read.

Flop Aces-up, you don't expect your opponent to flop a set of aces, that's for sure.
Earlier in the tourney, I maybe get away from that hand. As is, I think this has to qualify as a "whatchoogonnado?" situation.
]]>Okay, Les Deux Orangs did make an extremely loose call on my all-in on the flop (as have we all) to suck out on me (as has everyone on PokerStars) when he hit his inside straight draw on the turn, making a better straight than the one I flopped.
It's poker. Chit happens.
Anyway, I got mad and acted like a petulant prick, which is a shame considering I'm really happy with the way my game is progressing. (I need to actually sit down and write about what I feel is the significance of my stats profile at some point, but I want to take some time to do it when I have the time, which isn't now.)
Just wanted to note there's more than one way to be a Donkey. A wiser Mutt tries to not do any of them.
